Expert Biohacking Tips for Physical Health and Wellbeing

Maintaining your health and wellbeing can be as simple as regular exercise, meditation, or visiting wellness centres for professional support. But what if you could take a more hands-on approach to achieve optimal health?

Introducing biohacking—a do-it-yourself approach to optimise your body, mind, and performance through human enhancements. Biohacking involves making incremental changes to your body, diet, and lifestyle to enhance overall wellbeing. It can alter the body’s chemistry and physiology, and improve functions such as sleep, mood, energy, and weight management, and reduce cellular ageing. While its popularity has grown in recent decades, many biohacking techniques, such as ice baths, fasting, and meditation, have been used for centuries.

RAIN’s in-house health expert and functional medicine practitioner, Marie Guerlain, shares her top biohacking tips. These are small changes or additions you can incorporate into your routine to enhance your physical health and wellbeing.

1. Intermittent Fasting

This involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting. It can help with weight loss, improve metabolic health, and promote longevity. Popular methods include the 16/8 method (fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window) and the 5:2 method (eating normally for 5 days and significantly reducing calorie intake for 2 days).

2. Cold Exposure

Taking cold showers or ice baths can improve circulation, boost your immune system, and enhance mood by increasing endorphin levels. Regular cold exposure can also improve your body's resilience to stress.

3. Earthing (Grounding)

Walking barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil can reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being by reconnecting your body with the Earth's electrons.

4. Red Light Therapy

Using red light therapy devices can help reduce inflammation, promote skin health, and improve muscle recovery. It involves exposing your skin to low levels of red or near-infrared light.

5. Hydration Optimisation

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of filtered water throughout the day. Adding electrolytes to your water can help support the adrenals and improve hydration.

6. Infrared Saunas

Using infrared saunas can help detoxify the body, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. Infrared heat penetrates the body more deeply than traditional saunas, providing more effective therapeutic benefits.

7. Functional Movement

Incorporate functional movements into your exercise routine to improve your overall mobility and reduce the risk of injury. This includes activities like yoga, Pilates, and bodyweight exercises.

8. Personalised Nutrition

Tailor your diet to your unique genetic makeup (genotype or complete set of genes), allergies, and sensitivities. Tools like DNA testing and food sensitivity tests can help you identify the best foods for your body.
